Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive and Donate

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County (BBBS SLO) hosted its third annual Dodgeball Fundraiser. Hurtling balls hasn’t always been a pastime of the fundraiser for the organization, but when numbers began to drop with their bowling event, Patty Carpenter, development director, thought it was time for a change.

Carpenter said the event keeps getting bigger and better. Their first year enticed 16 groups to join in on the fun. This year, 30 groups representing SLO County businesses and organizations decided it would be a good idea to dress up and pelt each other with rubber spheres.

Some of the more colorful teams were the Burt Reynoldss[sic] who sported outfits from the actors various movies and faux moustaches and Dolls with Balls dressed in bright pink and light blue with a questionable logo. Commenting on some of the more extravagant costumes, Carpenter said, “You also have some teams that go balls out, if you know what I mean.”

The event not only functions as a fundraiser, but also as a way to attract and interest donors from a younger crowd that hopefully continues to give and invest in the non-profit. Avila Bay and Athletic Spa donated its tennis courts.

More than $20,000 was raised to support youth mentoring programs in San Luis Obispo county
