Biggest, Baddest Lingcod Contest

Sport fishing season has reopened, and that means the 5th Annual John Rowley’s Biggest Baddest Lingcod Competition is underway once again at Virg’s Landing in Morro Bay.
The sport fishing contest started with the opening of rock cod fishing season and runs through the end of the season.
The biggest lingcod caught every week is automatically entered into the final “fish-off” in December, with some $10,000 in prize money on the line.
Virg’s Landing offers half-day, three-fourths day, full day and overnight fishing trips. Stop by the tackle shop at 1169 Market Ave., or check them out online at: for trip information and pricing.
The contest is named for Capt. John Rowley (now retired), whose family of boat captains piloted boats for Virg’s Landing for several decades. In the photo is last year’s contest winner, Jerry Breazeale, holding his winning 26.5-pound lingcod. The fish was worth $5,ooo for Breazeale. Second place got $3,000 and third place got $2,000.
