For the sixteenth year in a row, the City of Pismo Beach was recognized for its outstanding reporting on its finances. The city received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The award is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.
The Excellence program is designed to encourage governments from the United States and Canada to produce financial information in an accessible and understandable way for public consumption. According to GFOA, over 4,000 governments participate each year.
During a city council meeting Jim Lewis, city manager, stressed the importance of the award. “This is a really big deal,” said Lewis. “This award is given to entities that have put together a comprehensive annual financial report.” He went on to say, “So many cities just do what is required, they don’t take that extra step to really connect the dots and tell the story of the city’s financial history and financial statues.”
Both Lewis and Mayor Ed Waage presented the award to Administrative Services Director, Nadia Feeser on the Sept. 18 city council meeting.
“Susan West-Jones, the City’s Finance Manager, is the key staff person whose efforts and contribution have made this award possible,” said Feeser via email. “She goes over and beyond to make sure the city’s financial statements are prepared accurately and in a timely manner, organizing efforts in the Administrative Services Department and across all Departments.”
