Dinner and a Movie

Rounding the corner at Dolliver Street, I expect the smell of cinnamon rolls to assault my senses, but instead, I smelled meat.
It is the smell of glorious and delectable smoking meat that hits me, as I enter into the new carnivore Heaven that is the Central Coast Meat Company. I am also greeted with big smiles and warm welcomes from the owners, Jason Gable and Eric DeMatteo.
The menu is simple, six kinds of meat to choose from and four sides. I chose sweet tea brined turkey, brisket, and ribs. You can add lettuce to anyone to make a salad, or bread bun to make a sandwich. I chose just the meat and sides of picnic potato salad and pit beans. My beverage, Shiner Bock Beer, is a wonderful surprise, a gift from Texas that goes perfectly with this kind of meal. Shiner Bock is made by Spoetzl Brewery, located in Shiner, Texas. The brewery is the oldest independent brewery in Texas and produces a diverse line of Shiner Beers, including their flagship Shiner Bock, a dark lager that is now distributed in 49 lucky States.
I try the brisket first, and it is so tender and flavorful, it is hard to stop eating. On the table are two bottles of house-made BBQ sauce and I pick the one marked “Spicy.”
It has just a hint of chipotle and it isn’t spicy, but lovely. I watch the smiley Pit Master Mike move meat around, doing the delicate dance to make all the dishes impeccable.
I move on to the ribs, which are dry rubbed and fall-off-the-bone good. I squirt some BBQ sauce on them, and it is flawlessness. With a sauce mustache, I inhale these ribs.
The pit beans are pinto beans and shredded brisket loaded with spices, which gives them a unique feeling in my mouth, but I save them for breakfast tomorrow when I plan to make an egg burrito with them.
The picnic potato salad is classic sour cream and back with a mayo base and is terrific. My last try is the turkey breast, which is moist and tender. I’m in awe of this fantastic new place and go back to the counter to introduce myself and ask some questions.
Eric and Jason explain that after many trips to Austin, Texas, they decided to open a barbecue place in Pismo. The food is styled after the Austin barbecue, but using local meats and making their own sauces.
“Our family’s search for the most delicious barbecue led us to Central Texas,” Jason said, “where we fell in love with the long, oak smoke flavor infused into briskets and ribs, not to mention the icy cold Lonestars, which we are trying to get and to offer at the restaurant! We brought these techniques home to the already oak rich Central Coast in the hopes of sharing our passion, and a few cold ones, with you and yours.”
Eric added, “Central Coast Meat Market uses premium, ethically raised meats and locally sourced vegetables combined with a fast, casual environment to provide a great experience for our guests.” I was an instant fan.
I returned the next day with my husband. The only dessert on the menu was banana pudding from New Orleans and this is one of Mr. Bayus’ favorite things on Planet Earth.
He orders a pint of it first and moves the Vanilla Wafers aside to dig in. He is in banana Heaven. I try the hot links with a beef and pork mix, the ribs again are St. Louis Cut and Texas smoked, and the pulled pork that I taste first and then drown in the spicy BBQ sauce.
They did not necessarily need it, but I did. Gary has the brisket and ribs, and the yummy noises escaping his mouth, prove that I was right — this is a man’s Rapture.
We talked to Eric after, and he tells us they are going to keep it simple, maybe add some smoked bacon, but this fast-casual meat market is an accomplishment. Everything is made simple and in-house, which you can taste in each bite.
They have a wide selection of beer and wine, and a bar of onions, pickles and relish to make any meat into a Texas-style sandwich.

‘Darkest Hour’ Is Oldman’s Finest Hour

The movie Darkest Hour is set during the early days of World War II, when the fate of Western Europe hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Hitler or fight on against incredible odds.
Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Churchill is far more convincing than some other recent depictions. He looks the part, as he has undergone a remarkable transformation. But it’s not just his appearance — he’s managed to catch the essence of the man.
It was dangerous for an actor to rely on Churchill’s famous props such as his cigar. It’s not just the look, but stance, style, and speech.
The plot: Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty, and freedom of a nation.
As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
Joe Wright, the gifted director of “Atonement,” presents us with an irresistible version of Churchill through the magic powers of Oldman.
He uses his signature tracking shots to set up a visual narrative for his films, but sometimes he doesn’t seem to trust the power of what he has in his hand.
Eccentric cuts in the middle of a famous speech for instance and other stylistic distractions arrive with irritating frequency, but that doesn’t spoil too much of the joy and fun of seeing Olman in action. Also interesting to notice, The Battle of Dunkirk provides a very moving moment for the second time this year.
Darkest House has a strong cast throughout, including the portrayers of King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn), Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup), Lord Halifax (Stephen Dillane) and Churchill’s lovely secretary (Lilly James).
A must see for WW II buffs and appreciators of great cinema everywhere.
